Food insecurity is a reality facing 35 million Americans. One in five children and one in ten adults in Alaska are at risk of going to bed hungry tonight. Every day, people have to choose between food or medicine or paying their bills. Southeast Alaska Food Bank is dedicated to eradicating hunger in Alaska by obtaining and distributing food to nonprofit agencies and individuals in Juneau and southeast Alaska. We collect surplus and unmarketable but still edible food from grocery stores, and redistribute it to nonprofit agencies and individuals throughout the area. The thirty nonprofit agencies that receive food from SEAFB include homeless shelters, youth agencies, transitional housing services, domestic abuse shelters and senior citizen services. We attempt to always have on hand a wide variety of canned and nonperishable staple foods, as well as perishables such as milk, bread and produce. SEAFB relies on food donations from grocery stores and distributors, and locally organized food drives. When donations run low, SEAFB purchases food from local stores or from Food Bank of Alaska. Our funding is from private and corporate donations, and the United Way of Southeast Alaska fundraising campaign. Last year, over 1800 hours of volunteer work kept SEAFB running smoothly.
