The Community Kitchen was founded in February, 1982 by a group of concerned ministers and lay people under the leadership of Rev. Lavern Hanson. Five years later, in March of 1987, The Community Kitchen Of North Iowa, Inc., was established as an independent, nonprofit corporation, which seeks to meet the long and short term needs of hungry people and children throughout North Iowa. The Kitchen was licensed under the Iowa Restaurant Code in 1990 to insure the quality of the meals and the cleanliness of the facility. In April, 1996, The Kitchen moved from quarters in the Salvation Army building to our own facility at 606 North Monroe in Mason City, Iowa. Our Mission is to provide balanced, nutritious noon meals six days a week to those in need without regard to race, color, creed, nationality, age, gender, handicap, religion, or political affiliation.
